Providing Special Education in Michigan's Charter Schools

Episode One: The Continuous Improvement and Monitoring System
Teresita Long and Karen Fales, from the Michigan Department of Education, provide an overview of Michigan's Continuous Improvement and Monitoring System (CIMS). This critical statewide project focuses on improving results for students with disabilities and their families. Long and Fales cover the basic components of CIMS, the role of monitoring in special education, compliance and implementation of the state performance plan.

Episode Two: Emergency Use of Seclusion and Restraint
Joanne Winkelman, policy coordinator in the Michigan Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Early Intervention Services, discusses the State Board of Education's policy, "Supporting Student Behavior: Standards for the Emergency Use of Seclusion and Restraint." She'll describe the development and framework of the new policy, including definitions, limitations, procedures, documentation requirements, and prohibited practices.

Matt Korolden, transition core team member from the Michigan Department of Education Office of Special Education and Early Intervention Services, discusses transition planning. Required for students receiving special education services, the process focuses on the relevance and relationship aspects of secondary education. Quality planning enhances student engagement, increases graduation rates, and improves post-secondary outcomes.
