FOCUS on Results are brief guidance and technical assistance documents published periodically by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), Office of Special Education and Early Intervention Services (OSE-EIS) to keep stakeholders up-to-date on current changes in rules and regulations, dispute resolution, individualized education programs (IEP), alternate assessment, accountability, continuous improvement, early childhood, and other valuable and relevant topics.

Dear Special Education Stakeholder:

The 2007-08 edition of the Michigan Directory of Service Providers for Infants, Toddlers, and Students with Disabilities is now available on the Center for Educational Networking Web site. You can download the complete directory or specific sections in a PDF format.

The directory is intended for parents, educators, and other service providers seeking resource information related to the educational needs of children, students, and clients. The directory contains contact information about resources for children ages birth to three with special needs and their families (Michigan's Early On® population) and students ages 3-26 with disabilities.

Listings include special education and Early On administrative personnel in local and intermediate school districts (ISDs), specialized schools, and public school academies (charter schools). The directory is not meant to be a comprehensive list of all personnel, but instead provides basic contact information for administrators and others who provide services to infants, toddlers, and students with disabilities.

The directory also contains contact information for the Michigan Department of Education, Michigan Department of Corrections, Michigan Department of Community Health, Michigan Department of Human Services, Michigan local public health departments, neonatal intensive care units, and Michigan and national agencies, associations, and organizations.

Dear Special Education Stakeholder:

We invite you to read the latest edition of Reaching Agreement. The newsletter can be viewed online or downloaded as a PDF.

You will find information about how IEP facilitation and mediation can help parents and educators avoid or resolve special education disputes quickly and at no charge.

The new edition of Reaching Agreement will inform you about:

  • Mediation's potential in addressing placement issues.
  • The opportunity to comment on a proposed new OSE/EIS policy to encourage early dispute resolution and streamline the state complaint process.

Dear Special Education and Early Intervention Stakeholders:

If you believe in solving problems collaboratively, you may wish to visit the revised Web site for the Michigan Special Education Mediation Program (MSEMP) at www.cenmi.org/msemp.

You will find a new Q & A (under About the MSEMP) to inform you about the use of IEP facilitation and mediation in avoiding or resolving special education and early intervention disputes.

You also will find a new downloadable IEP facilitation brochure. A printed brochure will be sent in the mail. The brochure reviews the benefits of facilitated IEP meetings and of honing your own facilitation skills for better meetings in the future.

Should you need services, the Web site provides contact information for the MSEMP center serving your area. Its as easy as calling 1-800-8RESOLVE.

More educators and parents are turning to the MSEMP to find mutual solutions to complex issues. They also are contacting the MSEMP to increase their conflict resolution skills.

Either way, the MSEMP can help you reduce conflict and
increase the time spent on education. MSEMP services are free to parents and educators.
